The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve comprises substantial areas of natural vegetation ranging from dry scrub to evergreen forests and swamps, contributing to the region’s biodiversity. The altitude and climatic gradients support and nourish the different vegetational types.

The shola forests, unique and colorful, are the everlasting beauty of these mountains. The Shola trees on the high grasslands have a unique ecology that can be best compared to a great sponge. Sholas typically consist of trees less than 15 meters in height, a result of the high wind velocities in these areas. These trees absorb the water drops carried by every cloud that passes by them on a cloudy day and absorb the moisture from the air on a sunny day. The undulations of the folded mountains aid in the condensation of the clouds. The sparkling waters that condense on these hills collect into streams and flow down, giving rise to perennial waters.

Apart from the Sholas, fruit trees are also prevalent. Rhododendrons are another Himalayan connection. Rhododendron is an important plant growing in the high altitudes of the Western Ghats (above 1,500 m). The plant has ecological importance in addition to its graceful flowers, as it provides habitat and shelter for various wildlife species. Algae, lichens, and orchids grow well on Rhododendron trees. They cling to the branches of the trees and help in the absorption of moisture. A large number of medicinal plants are also found in the NBR.
